Commemorating 100th Paris Olympic Anniversary
Colorado Springs, CO (May 8, 2024) – Students from two Colorado Springs school art classes, who recently having participated in five country international art in sports contest, will gather at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum to celebrate their efforts to commemorate the 100th Paris Olympic Anniversary.
The contest event, hosted by the Al Oerter Foundation(AOF)/Art of the Olympians(AOTO) in cooperation with the City of Colorado Springs and the iconic newly constructed United States Olympic/Paralympic Museum, drew the interest of more than 300 grade school through high school students’ artists from five nations (the United States, France, Italy, Slovenia, and Botswana).
With guidance and assistance from Olympic member AOF/AOTO artists, student artist participated in either thematic works commemorating the 1924 Paris Olympics or worked with student artist in France, Slovenia, and Italy to jointly create a giant mural depicting the ancient Olympic symbol of Discobolous. Each student art team from their respective country has created a quarter of the mural that will be assembled and unveiled at the May 15th award ceremony in Paris.
Fittingly, students from Will Rogers Elementary School and Eagleview Middle School will gather at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum to celebrate and be recognized for their artistic efforts and achievements in this two-month long program. During the program, representatives of the Al Oerter Foundation will assist in handing out participation certificates and medals to the Colorado Spring student art contingent.
Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals will be awarded to each participating classrooms. Special archival posters are being given to all participants by AOF event sponsor, the LeRoy Neiman and Janet Byrne Neiman Foundation, which supports organizations that promote the study, improvement, and advancement of the arts by providing opportunities for youth to develop a path towards a successful future.
Al Oerter Foundation CEO Cathy Oerter and Olympian artists will be among others the will speak remotely at awards ceremony from the U.S. Embassy in Paris to students and those present at the USOPC Museum festivities. “What could be a better facility than our nation’s Olympic Museum for student artists to gather and celebrate the Olympic ideals of art in sports,” she said. “We thrilled and extremely appreciative to the USOPC for hosting this event in their magnificent building which houses a depicts so many wonder moments in U.S. Olympic Sports history.”
