The Fields of Dreams “Art of Throwing” Community Celebration Project.

• On November 1st & 2nd, 2024 in Wilmington, CA (South Los Angeles) at the South Bay Athletic Club (a.k.a. The Fields of Dreams) a unique 4-year project will begin celebrating the beginning of the 4-year journey to the next Summer Olympic & Paralympics Games in 2028 in Los Angeles: The Fields of Dreams “Art of Throwing” Community Project:

• This project will combine the two universal languages of sport and art with community engagement. Children from the Wilmington Boys & Girls Club, working with elite international and Olympic athletes, will create 4 enormous contemporary images of all four throwing events – javelin, hammer, discus and shot put, on a 4-acre athletic throwing field using nothing more than yellow straw laid down on the green grass.

• These massive environmentally friendly images – big enough to be seen from space – will be captured from above via drone cameras and shared with the world, sending a message that Los Angeles is ready and excited to host the next edition of the summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.

• The Four Female American Olympic athletes that inspired each of the 4 artworks for this “Art of Throwing” project are: #1. 2016 Olympic Shot Put Champion Michelle Carter. #2. Two-Time Olympic Javelin Bronze Medalist (‘72 & ‘76) and former World Record holder Kate Schmidt. #3. Three-Time Olympian, 2019 World Gold Medalist (Hammer) & World Record Holder in the Weight Throw Deanna Marie Price. #4. 2023 World Discus Champion Lagi Tausaga.

• The artwork for this project were created by internationally acclaimed sports artist Roald Bradstock a.k.a “The Olympic Picasso” – a two-time Olympic Javelin thrower, three-time Olympic artist and creator of the new globally recognized “Olympism” art genre.

* The videos and photographs on the field will be captured by world-renowned award-winning sports photographer Marc Serota.

* The inspirations for this project are 1. The academic research studies that reveal the ability to throw objects hard and accurately 2 million years ago allowed us – humans – to become who we are to today – Harvard study – Columbian Collage of Arts & Sciences Article 2. An acknowledgement to the ancient sporting events at the Olympic Games that included both Javelin and Discus throwing. 3. An acknowledgement to ancient art ceramic paintings of javelin throwers, and discus sculptures – in particular the ancient Greek sculpture “Discobolus” by Myron. 4. A tribute to the legendary modern day Olympic icon 4-time consecutive Olympic Discus Champion, Al Oerter.

• The “Art of Throwing” project is an Al Oerter Foundation / Art of the Olympians activation in partnership with the South Bay Athletic Club & The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor.
