Student Artists Receive Medals
for Achievement in 5-Country Sports In Art Contest
The Al Oerter Foundation (AOF) completed this past May its most successful multi-nation student art and education program with the participation of more than 350 student artists from the United States, France, Italy, Slovenia, and Botswana.
The program, culminating in a student art contest under the art event theme, “Moving History Forward,” was held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Paris Olympic Games. Awards ceremonies, honoring participating students artists where held this past May/June in three locations – U.S. Ambassador to Paris residency, at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs, Co., and at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, NY.
AOF awards ceremonies were held to commemorate a three-month odyssey for the more than 350 student artists from the five participating countries. Students from schools in Colorado Springs, Lake Placid, Paris, Rome, Kranz (Slovenia) and Botswana were educated in the ideals of Olympism and then challenged to either participate in the development of a mural or creation of their own painting depicting and celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Paris Olympics.
The program established by the Al Oerter Foundation and its affiliate Art of the Olympians, says Pierre de Coubertin Family Association president Alexandra de Navacelle de Courbertin speaking at the Paris awards ceremony, “is symbolic of modern of my grandfather’s (modern Olympic Games founder Pierre de Coubertin) vision of uniting the world through arts in sports. The de Coubertin Family is proud to be part of the program overseen and steered by the Al Oerter Foundation.”
Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals will be awarded to each participating classroom and special archival posters are being given to all participants by AOF partner, the LeRoy Neiman and Janet Byrne Neiman Foundation, which supports organizations that promote the study, improvement and advancement of the arts and provide opportunities for youth to develop paths to successful futures.
Al Oerter Foundation CEO Cathy Oerter expressed her appreciation to the support and assistance of its partners and affiliates. “We are so thankful to have the support and alliances with the Olympic Regional Development Authority in Lake Placid, the LeRoy Neiman and Janet Byrne Neiman Foundation in NYC, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum, and the Pierre de Coubertin Family Association. A special appreciation is extended to U.S. Ambassador to France, Denise Campbel Bauer, for the support of her staff and welcoming by her to host this special event at her residence.”
